Following a successful pilot round in 2006, The National Archives is delighted to announce that the 2007 round of the Cataloguing Grants Scheme is now open to applications from institutions in Northern Ireland and the North East, East Midlands and South West regions of England. The Pilgrim Trust and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation have again provided £200,000 funding to tackle cataloguing backlogs. The National Archives undertakes administration and assessment of the scheme, while the final decisions on the allocation of grants are made by an independent Cataloguing Grants Panel.
Museums, Libraries and Archive Councils in the selected regions will be helping to asses applications to the scheme by being members of the Assessment Panel in each region.
The scheme now has a two-stage application process to reduce the workload for unsuccessful applicants. This involves a first stage in which applicants explain why the collection(s) proposed for cataloguing is important, and how they prioritised this above other uncatalogued material. Those who progress to the second stage will then be invited to submit a more detailed application, including a full project plan and precise costs.
The deadline for first stage applications is 17 August 2007.
