The Learn with Museums website (www.learnwithmuseums.org.uk) offers free educational resources for teachers and pupils based on the materials and collections of museums in the East Midlands.
The website has been created by museum educators working together with teachers to produce flexible learning packages that support a variety of curriculum subjects. These packages contain information about museum services for schools, downloadable resources, suggested activities and online interactives.
All museums in the East Midlands area are encouraged to contribute, and the site provides information for schools and teachers about how to plan and prepare for a museum visit. Resources can be searched by Key Stage, subject area and/or museum location.
The website is part of the wider Learn with Museums initiative. Renaissance East Midlands has invested in Learn with Museums by appointing an e-learning manager, Bryony Robins, to co-ordinate the development of the website. New features will include a series of ‘How To Guides’ explaining how schools can benefit from working with museums, together with further interactives for pupils.
Contributions by museums include:
- Northampton Museum's learning packages: In Your Shoes and Made to Last, which are supported by online interactives for pupils.
- Derby Museum and Art Gallery’s resource Changing Rooms, which uses role play and digital resources to enable KS2 pupils to explore Pickford’s House Museum,
- Leicester City Museums’ Investigating the Victorians, which includes a mystery object activity,
- Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum has created two learning packages: A Day at the Seaside and Living in a Bungalow made of Iron, which use photographs of a local familiy from its collection.
And coming soon…
- Nottingham City Museums and Galleries are developing a history and citizenship resource about the opening of the Castle Museum,
- Leicestershire Heritage Services is creating a package about life in Tudor times at Donington le Heath Manor House,
- Lincolnshire Heritage Services is using the theme ‘Homes from the Past’ to develop a resource for its museums.
