East Midlands archives services

Document stacks at the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and RutlandThere are five local authority archive services and one university archive service in the East Midlands. Their role is to locate, acquire and preserve archives and to make them available to users. The collections usually relate to a particular location (a county in the case of a local authority service) or to a particular area of study. Local authority archive services undertake a great deal of work in order to secure and preserve a region's heritage. They locate and acquire collections from various sources, are involved with the preservation and conservation of these collections and produce detailed collection lists and databases of their contents, while all the time balancing the preservation needs and security of the collections within their care with the needs of the public, depositors and the researching community.
